Subject: Excellent recording!
Subject: Excellent recording!
I'm wondering if I should bother anymore looking for the SBD, which, like most boards of this era, is likely to be totally devoid of any crowd. Never understood that choice of mix, makes them sound depressingly alone in the venue. Eff it, I'll dl it, if the SBD shows up on bt I'll probably listen for two minutes and toss it. Thanks for this one.

fantastic sound quality. there is a heft and bottom to this recording so that one experiences the full 360? sound that was a live dead experience. in fact, if there were recordings like this of most shows, no one would care that boards got pulled from download status.
the dead were crisp and in the no-monitor-completely-digital mode. jerry sounds clean and sharp on this one. despite some flubs and a mumbly tune here and there, i like fall '93 shows. catching the string in boston (loved 9-29-93), i missed this show. everyone always highlighted the guest nights at m.s.g., but this gives much more flavor of the dead punching the time clock and delivering magic in places.
the days between has muscle. no joke. it shows the potential for flight they had at this point in their career, ready to turn another new sound era corner. unfortunately, within a year, it was beginning to sound more like crashing and burning. check them out here poised for flight in a new direction with sound and spirit. too bad it was never fully consumated.
this would get 4 stars, but some cuts are not up to par. a shaky eyes is always a buzz kill for me.

Through "China Cat Sunflower," the show is one of the best performed and recorded from this era. It starts to slide on "I Know You Rider," where the energy makes up for the marijuana-parched-throat vocals, finally bottoming on what has to be the worst take of "Eyes of the World" ever (Garcia can't even find the melody line, let alone the key). Things start to pick up again after the half-hour overindulgence in "Drums" and "Space," both of which are as vapid as their titles, and close out with generally solid performances of the band's 90s material. The recording is among the best throughout. Throw out three or four numbers in the middle that aren't worth the disk space, and you have an excellent show containing some of the band's more elusive material.

really enjoyed this one. jer sure does a number on days between. i saw this performed live only once - '93 summer rfk - and i remember it sounding otherworldly and almost spooky. this version has it all with good playing all around and a nice throwing stones afterwards - listening to nfa now, don't remember the encore coming up. i sure wish that gd had released a cleaned up cd or something of just those tunes from the 90s - lazy river, days, liberty, easy answers, corirna, childhood's end, wave to the wind, etc. thanks to the archive and happy new year. show should have a 3.5, 4 for days between.
